Earlier this summer, a friend and colleague professed his commitment to finding his inner Order Muppet. Whether he read Dahlia Lithwick’s post on Slate or listened to her interview with NPR’s Scott Simon is unclear, but it got me to thinking about Muppet Theory and how it might factor into my own professional world order and in particular, a creative environment.

In the world of events and live experiences, there is room – no, there is a real need – for both Chaos and Order Muppets. We need the folks who are emotional, prone to swirling and fond of small flaming objects. And without the regimen and responsibility imposed by the second group, the show truly would not go on.

Of course as Lithwick admits, putting anyone into only one category may be a lot of fun but is simplistic at best. I share her opinion that most of us are made up of varying degrees of both and embrace the notion that this is a good thing. I mean, who doesn’t like a little bit of pyro? But it’s the most fun when it’s set up properly and actually goes off according to plan.

(And yes, after some internet reconnaissance and a few personality “tests,” it turns out that I am Kermit – but I really see myself as more of a Grover…)
